    MAINE MAN CHARGED WITH BRIBERY SCHEME INVOLVING U.S. ARMY SPACE AND MISSILE COMMAND IN HUNTSVILLE

    BIRMINGHAM, AL - United States Attorney Alice H. Martin of the Northern District of Alabama and Carmen S. Adams, Special Agent in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation announce today that MAURICE HENRY SUBILIA has been charged in an Information with Conspiracy to Bribe a Public Official and Bribing a Public Official.

    SUBILIA, 64, of Kennebunkport, Maine was charged in a two-count Information filed today in U. S. District Court in Birmingham. The Information charges that between 2001 and 2007, SUBILIA paid $1.2 million dollars to public officials from the United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command with the intent to influence the public officials' actions on the funding of certain government contracts. During that period, SUBILIA was the president and a director of Lealagi, Inc. and Sage Technologies, LLC, both of whom were subcontractors on government contracts for the U.S. Army. The maximum sentence for bribing a public official is fifteen years in prison and a $250,000.00 fine. The maximum sentence for conspiracy to bribe a public official is five years in prison and a $250,000.00 fine.

    FORMER CITY COUNCILMAN AND COUNTY COMMISSIONER KATOPODIS CHARGED WITH LOOTING CHARITY COFFERS OF $250,000

     
    BIRMINGHAM, AL – GREGORY JOHN KATOPODIS, 61, a former resident of Birmingham now residing in Boston, Massachusetts, was arrested this morning on charges of 97 counts of mail fraud, wire fraud, and honest services fraud in connection with his theft of the funds of local charity, Computer Help for Kids (CHK).  The federal Indictment was unsealed this morning in U.S. District Court according to U.S. Attorney Alice H. Martin, Special Agent in Charge Carmen Adams, FBI; and Reginael D. McDaniel, Special Agent in Charge, Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigations.

    KATOPODIS, who was a member of the Birmingham City Council in the 1970s and the Jefferson County Commission in the 1980s, was involved in founding CHK and controlled its finances and bank account.  CHK’s mission was to repair used computers donated by area businesses and to distribute them to poor, needy, and disadvantaged children of Jefferson County, Alabama to increase access to technology.
